Trinity Newsletter for October 6, 2022

From Pastor Chris

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week in the Presbyterian Church (USA). We recognize that our health and wellbeing is more than physical, but encompasses our mental, emotional, and spiritual wholeness as well. While decreasing, there remains stigma in our community around issues of mental and emotional health, with some people still wrongly equating these issues with personal weakness.

As the church we have an important role to play in reducing this stigma and helping connect people with resources so they can thrive. Mental and emotional health issues are nothing to be ashamed of. When we recognize there is something in our life impacting our wellbeing, whether that is a broken leg or feelings of anxiety or depression, we should seek out appropriate professional care, follow through with treatment, and work to return to a place of wholeness and wellbeing.

There are lots of good resources here in Springfield to help care for your own mental and emotional health, or to connect a friend or loved one to good resources. For a place to start, here's a great resource from the Springfield-Greene County Health Department on Community Resources, including the new 988 Lifeline:

https://www.springfieldmo.gov/3683/Community-Resources-for-Mental-Health

If you need help accessing mental health resources or don't know where to start, please give me a call. I'm always available to sit down and chat about concerns, questions, or the spiritual side of whatever situation you may be facing.

On a personal note, today I will be having a minor surgical procedure that was rescheduled from earlier in the year due to Elizabeth's medical needs. I will be out of the office from today (Thursday, October 6) through Sunday as I recover. If you have any pressing needs, please contact the church office and June will be happy to assist. Rev. Bill Havens will be preaching on Sunday, and I know you will be blessed by his words.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Chris

Afghan Refugees Update

Hello, Trinity!

Our Aghan friends enjoyed meeting the people and Pastor of Trinity at the September 25 picnic! The area was lovely and they each had great fun and food!!

The Trinity Team is certainly utilizing Jordan Valley Community Health Center for all the heretofore unaddressed medical needs of our refugees. Securing their health is an important aspect of the team’s support and will, of course, impact their lives here in a good way.

Donations continue to be offered as these young men need them. Fahim and Ali, our most recent additions, now have a washer and dryer in their duplex. We also have a crock pot, microwave, and TV, given in support of our friends. Adnan, in his senior year of high school requests “a used laptop, if possible, please.”

After meeting with International studies at MSU, one will apply for the English Language Institute, another for completion of his bachelor degree before applying to med school, and one will apply for graduate school. There are 2 others who will do ESL at OTC, as they have little or no English skills.

These young men have so much weighing on their hearts because of family, spouses, and children they left behind. Yet, they smile, work hard, and persevere. We are so in awe of their accomplishments. Please know that your kindness supports them in all their efforts, and they think of you with hearts full of gratitude.

Peace,

Martha Sparrow, team leader, CSG of Trinity

Also in 1994, Princeton Theological Seminary honored Dr. Cavicchia with its Distinguished Alumnus Award for his 23 years of administrative service to the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA). A year later, John Calvin Presbytery awarded him the status of Executive Presbyter Emeritus.
